An Obession with Hamlet

A fascinating journey behind the scenes of the renowned Bell Shakespeare Company's production of Hamlet, from first rehearsal to opening night.

John Bell, one of Australia's highest profile actors and directors, has stamped the role of Hamlet as his own, having played it numerous times over 35 years. Now he is handing on the baton to talented young actor Leon Ford who moulds it into something fresh and exciting as Bell directs and watches the process with joy.

The company playing with him in this acclaimed production is a mix of young and seasoned actors and their blood, sweat and tears rehearsing and refining the play come with intensity and playfulness. Seeing and hearing their preparation and calculation to make this production audience-ready is a wonderful eye-opener for everyone, not just theatre buffs.

PRODUCTION DETAILS: Produced and directed by Anthony Heffernan.

EDITED by Wendy Dent. The project was then acquired for further post-production and release by the ABC.

Screened Duration: 60 mins
Broadcast 4/4/2010, Channel ABC2 (60 minutes)

a "charming and uncomplicated doco... a fascinating mix of the banal and the profound: the wardrobe assistant complains about make-up staining the costumes because the actors keep "dying on each other" and Hamlet's queen wonders whether her knees will hold out during one of the more physical scenes... A must-see for anyone who ever dreamed of saying: "Hey, kids - let's put on a show!"

The Comeback Kings
(90 min Doc)

Official Selection;

Melbourne International Film festival 2003

An upbeat profile of 60s' Australian rock star brothers Colin & Denny Burgess (of AC/DC, The Masters' Apprentices, The Throb fame) as they attempt their big comeback against overwhelming odds.

...Is it too late to do it all again?

Soon after Australian rock n' roll musos the brothers Denny and Colin Burgess survived a nasty car accident, filmmaker Joel Peterson set about making a doco about their comeback. A year later to the day, the Burgess brothers get ready for a modest comeback gig. In the process, they look back on their 30 year careers, which includes the story of AC/DC, The Masters Apprentices and The Throb.

The Comeback Kings premiered at the 2003 Melbourne International Film festival.

Production Manager: WENDY DENT

Director & Cinematographer: Joel Peterson
(c) Film Buff Productions 2002

"A typically Australian, unpretentious, rough and ready doco with a rockstalgic tone, The Comeback Kings is snappy and intimate. The brothers, members of their family, fellow rockers and rock historian Glenn A. Baker contribute to the doco and give their careers considerable context. The brothers are down to earth and their no nonsense style enhances this film with a gusto that drives the film like a rock anthem...
Small insights, like Denny's banana sandwich breakfast, add glue to the film as a study of the brothers as real people, not just rock n'roll musos. And the clips from the past provide a glimpse into rock history through this specifically Australian perspective."
