It is the light that first deceives you.

 

 

A fragment of fantasy.

 

Or a fraction of reality?

 

....

 

I once saw a vision that led me to this distant place.

 

It left me there, subjected to its whims.

And I knew no way back.

 

 

Its cries beseeched me –

 

 

Turn back,

Turn back

 

With all your memories,

Your miseries

 

 

For your heart will never forget

 

the murderous mysteries

of this ancient place.

I can feel her kisses

Like the sadness

That creeps over my body

 

Between my veins

Through my blood.

 

 

Where is she...

Where is she...

 

 

Here by the canals

 

I first heard the cry of the spirits' screams.

Here by the Rialto

remember to be careful as you pass

for the soul of a child here

was spirited away

in a deal with the devil

- and here he now stays

 

 

 

Here in the water

if you listen and you look

you may see notes of music

dancing in the waves.

It is the notes of Vivaldi's last symphony.

forever unplayed.

 

 

 

Here in the tunnels

that wind like a skeleton

next to the canals

walks a skeleton,

a tall skeleton,

trying to find his way home

 

It is the walking bones of San Marco's

last Bell-ringer,

a man of very large frame...

who sold his own skeleton

before dying alone.

 

Now he wanders at night, drunk,

from an old Osteria,

searching the shadows

- with an ominous moan

 

 

 

Here by the Grand Canal

the tourists happily pass,

for they don't know of

the Ca Dario's

murderous past.

 

 

Its famous facade

houses a treacherous history.

Every one of its owners

could pre-empt

his own fate.

A freak accident perhaps,

or an unexpected guest,

a vengeance struck,

a life suddenly torn.

 

The means are many.

But the ending is always the same-

Each owner of "The Cursed Palace"

somehow

sooner or later -

untimely

tragically

mysteriously

perpetually

dead.

 

 

 

Here in the darkness

of the chilled water

you may glimpse a ghostly reflection

of a gondola,

rocking in the breeze.

It is lit by candles

forever alight

and is the floating casket

of a girl

who was drowned

one

dark

stormy

night.

 

 

 

Around the next corner

sits a sinister house.

it hosts the wicked

and the restless

who meet there under the moon

 

'The House of Spirits'

is a mystery

-one you don't want

to understand

lest you might join them

in their wicked nether-land

 

 

Here by the left window

of Marco Polo's

legendary abode

you may hear

wisftul singing

on a long lonesome night.

It is the beloved princess bride

of Marco Polo, who sings from the window

above the canal where she threw herself, alight.

Death,

Immortality.

 

Both are bound with the same rope

that slips from my hands.

 

I can hear her searching through my soul

Where are you?

Don’t come near.

Don’t venture round that corner

 

Don’t linger

Don’t look.

 

 

Never.

 

 

 

Never return to Venice, my dear.

 

Never taste the sweetness...

Of sorrow.

 

For you will never know joy again.

 

The light of the town.

The light of the sea...

All of it returns

And beckons me

 

 

But I implore you

To be…

Empty of me

For the spirits are dead and well

In the hallowed halls

Of Venice.
